“What do you do?” Such a simple question, yet it can be one of the hardest to answer. Having a well defined value proposition is critical for landing potential clients.
There’s a lot of pressure that comes with answering this question. What if the person doesn’t understand what I do? How can I say it in a way that makes sense to someone else? I can’t explain it in just one sentence.
The truth of the matter is that most people don’t actually care about what it is you do – they care about the value you provide.
Think of it this way. When you go to the salon to have your hair highlighted, do you care more about the combinations of color the stylist uses to process your hair – or, do you care about how good it looks and how good you feel when it’s done?
My guess is the latter.
The same can be applied to your value prop. People want to know what you can do for them and how you can make them feel, and less about the process you use to get them there.
Here’s three simple questions to ask yourself to help you create your value proposition.
- Who do you help? Get specific but keep it to the point. I recommend using an adjective to describe your target client if possible. (i.e., ambitious professionals, struggling entrepreneurs, successful women…)
- What do you help them do? This should be very action oriented and show a clear outcome. (start a podcast with ease, build the business of their dreams, grow their social media, etc…)
- How do you make them feel? Humans are emotional creatures and thrive on feeling. (i.e, confident, less stressed, empowered, etc…)
When you put the answers to these three questions into practice, you will find that you have a value prop that is easy to understand.
Here’s a look at my value prop as a business and storytelling coach.
“I help ambitious professionals build more meaningful connections in their business and feel more confident and empowered sharing their story.“
